Frequently Asked Questions on planning Fiji itinerary

How many days are enough for Fiji?

Fiji airway flight over Fiji - laugh travel eat

There is no definitive answer to this question, as it depends on your budget, preferences, and travel style. However, I would say that a minimum of 7 days is needed to see the highlights of Fiji and enjoy its beauty and diversity. If you have more time, you can extend your stay to 10 days or more, and explore more islands, activities, and regions.

What are the best months to visit Fiji?

Fiji has a tropical climate, which means it is warm and humid all year round. However, there are some variations in the weather, depending on the season and the location. Generally speaking, the best months to visit Fiji are from May to October, which is the dry season. The weather is sunny and pleasant, the humidity is lower, and the risk of cyclones is minimal. The downside is that this is also the peak season, which means higher prices and more tourists.

The wet season in Fiji is from November to April, which is also the summer season. The weather is hotter and more humid, and there are frequent rain showers and thunderstorms. The upside is that this is also the low season, which means lower prices and fewer tourists. However, you should also be aware of the possibility of cyclones, which can cause severe damage and disruption.

Is Fiji an expensive trip?

Fiji is not a cheap destination, but it is also not prohibitively expensive. The cost of your trip will depend on your choices of accommodation, transportation, food, and activities. You can find a range of options for different budgets and preferences, from luxury resorts to budget hostels, from domestic flights to local buses, from fine dining to street food, and from guided tours to DIY adventures. You can also save money by traveling in the low season, booking in advance, and looking for deals and discounts.

Fiji 10 day itinerary

This is my Fiji itinerary for 10 days, which covers the main island of Viti Levu, the Coral Coast, and the Yasawa Islands. It is a balanced itinerary that combines nature, culture, and relaxation, and it is suitable for most travelers. You can adjust it according to your interests and needs, and add or skip any destinations or activities as you wish.

Day 1: Arrive in Suva

Suva is the capital and the largest city of Fiji, and it is located on the southeast coast of Viti Levu, the largest island in the Fijian archipelago. Suva is a vibrant and cosmopolitan city, with a mix of colonial and modern architecture, a lively waterfront, and a diverse population. It is also the cultural and political center of Fiji, and it offers many attractions and amenities for visitors.

The international airport of Fiji is in Nadi, which is on the opposite side of Viti Levu. It takes about 4 hours to drive from Nadi to Suva, or you can take a short one hour flight. If you arrive in the morning or early afternoon, you can spend some time exploring Suva and its surroundings. If you arrive in the evening, you can just check in at your hotel and rest.

Fiji Museum

If you arrive before the late afternoon, you can pay a visit to the Fiji Museum right around the corner from Grand Pacific Hotel where I stayed. It’s inside the Thurston Gardens and is a small but comprehensive museum on Fiji’s past, present, and future.

Fiji National Museum Suva Fiji - laugh travel eat

Did you know that Moana took inspiration from Fijian’s traditional boats? Or that there are populations of Chinese and Indians? I won’t reveal too much so you’ll have a chance to learn for yourself.

Entry fee: $5.00 (Adult; 13+ yrs) $2.00 (Child; 2-12 yrs) $3.50 (Concession; 55+ yrs, tertiary students with ID, Tokani members and other special requests) $16.00 (Family; 2 adults & up to 3 children)

Opening times: 9:00 AM – 4:30 PM (Monday-Wednesday & Friday-Sunday), 9:00 AM – 7:00 PM (Thursday), Open on Public Holidays (except Christmas Day, Easter Sunday & Diwali)

Suva Accommodation

For your accommodation in Suva, I recommend the Grand Pacific Hotel, which is a historic and elegant hotel that dates back to 1914. It is located on the waterfront, overlooking the Suva Harbor, and it offers spacious and comfortable rooms, a swimming pool, a spa, and several restaurants and bars. It is also close to the city center and the main attractions of Suva.

After checking in, you can watch the sunset at the hotel and have dinner. You can choose from the hotel’s dining options, or venture out to the nearby restaurants and cafes. Suva has a variety of cuisines to offer, from local Fijian dishes to Indian, Chinese, Japanese, and more.

Day 2: River Tubing

On your second day in Fiji, you can have some fun and adventure by joining a river tubing tour. This tour will take you on a river tubing ride along the Navua River, which is about an hour’s drive from Suva. You will also visit a traditional Fijian village and a waterfall, and enjoy a buffet lunch.

I returned to Suva in time for dinner, which I had at the Grand Pacific Hotel.

Day 3: Transfer to Coral Coast

On your third day in Fiji, you will transfer to the Coral Coast, which is a stretch of coastline on the southwest of Viti Levu.

The Coral Coast is famous for its turquoise waters, coral reefs, and lush vegetation. It is also home to many resorts, hotels, restaurants, and activities, catering to different budgets and preferences.

You can take a taxi or a bus from Suva to the Coral Coast, which takes about 2 hours. You can also rent a car and drive yourself, which gives you more flexibility and convenience. Along the way, you can stop at some attractions, such as the Pacific Harbour, the Kula Eco Park, the Sigatoka Sand Dunes, and the Biausevu Waterfall.

Sangria La Yanuca Island

For your accommodation on the Coral Coast, I recommend the Shangri La Yanuca Island, which is a luxury resort on a private island, connected to the mainland by a causeway.

It offers spacious and elegant rooms, villas, and suites, with stunning views of the ocean or the garden. It also has a golf course, a spa, a fitness center, a kids club, and several pools, restaurants, and bars. It is also close to many attractions and activities on the Coral Coast, such as snorkeling, diving, surfing, fishing, and more.

After checking in, you can relax and enjoy the resort’s facilities and services, or explore the island and the beach. You can also watch the sunset and have dinner at the resort, or try some of the nearby dining options.

Day 4: Sigatoka River Safari

On your fourth day in Fiji, you can have another fun and cultural adventure by joining the Sigatoka River Safari. This tour will take you on a jet boat ride along the Sigatoka River, which is the longest river in Fiji. You will also visit another traditional Fijian village and have a kava ceremony, lunch, and some entertainment.

Day 5-8: Captain Cook Cruise: South Yasawara Route

If you want to experience the best of Fiji’s islands, then you can’t miss the Captain Cook Cruise: South Yasawara Rout3. This 4-night cruise will take you to some of the most stunning and remote islands in the Yasawa group, where you can enjoy snorkeling, diving, kayaking, hiking, village visits, cultural shows, and more.

Day 9: Nadi

On your ninth day in Fiji, you will return to the main island of Viti Levu and spend some time in Nadi, the third-largest city and the main gateway to Fiji. Nadi is a vibrant and cosmopolitan city, with a mix of cultures, cuisines, and attractions.

Captain Cook Cruise offers transfer to your hotel (in the Nadi area), or your hotel should also provide pick up and transport.

Some of the things you can do in Nadi are:

•  Visit the Sri Siva Subramaniya Temple: This is the largest Hindu temple in the Southern Hemisphere, and a stunning example of Dravidian architecture. You can admire the colorful carvings, paintings, and statues, and learn about the Hindu culture and religion. You can also join the daily prayers and ceremonies, or participate in the festivals and events.

•  Shop at the Nadi Market: This is a lively and colorful market, where you can find a variety of tropical fruits, vegetables, spices, flowers, handicrafts, and souvenirs. You can also sample some local delicacies, such as roti, curry, kokoda, and kava. You can also bargain with the friendly vendors and get some great deals.

•  Explore the Garden of the Sleeping Giant: This is a beautiful botanical garden, where you can see more than 2,000 varieties of orchids, as well as other exotic plants and flowers. You can also walk along the trails, cross the bridges, and admire the views of the mountains and the valley. You can also visit the lily pond, the bamboo forest, and the rainforest.

•  Day trip to Malamala Island:  If you are looking for a unique and exclusive island experience, then Malamala Island is the place for you. Malamala Island is a tiny islet within the Mamanuca Islands of Fiji, and it is the world’s first island beach club. You can enjoy the beach club with a day pass and experience white sand beaches, poolside day beds, beachside cabanas with butler service, an infinity edge pool, and amazing ocean views. You can also enjoy a delicious Pacific-inspired menu, handcrafted cocktails, and a club-like atmosphere with upbeat tunes. Malamala Island is a perfect destination for those who want to have some fun and sun in Fiji.

•  South Sea Island Cruise: For a relaxing and enjoyable day out in Fiji, you can’t go wrong with a South Sea Island Cruise. You will cruise to the picturesque South Sea Island, a tiny tropical island surrounded by crystal clear waters and colorful fish. You can spend the day lazing on the beach, swimming in the pool, snorkeling in the coral gardens, or taking a ride on a semi-submersible submarine. You will also have a delicious buffet lunch, free drinks, and entertainment on the island. A South Sea Island Cruise is the ultimate day trip for anyone looking for some fun and sun in Fiji.

You can do all of this on a day trip! Unfortunately, a typhoon hit the island when I was there, and I stayed mostly around my hotel. I did find my favourite restaurant of the trip (not that I ate at any other restaurant):

Grace Kitchen and Sunny Pizza

If you are craving some Asian and Italian cuisine, then Grace Kitchen and Sunny Pizza is the restaurant for you. Grace Kitchen and Sunny Pizza is a vegetarian-friendly restaurant chain in Nadi, and it offers a variety of dishes, such as tofu chips, vegetable rolls, dumplings, tofu steak, sweet potato, falafels, pizza, pasta, and more.

You can also enjoy the modern, clean, and cozy dining environment, as well as the friendly and attentive service. Grace Kitchen and Sunny Pizza is a great place to enjoy a tasty and satisfying meal with your loved ones.

I love their chicken bimbibap and their pizza was very good as well, but I wouldn’t say it’s very authentic Italian.

Day 10: Leave

This is the day you leave Fiji and a lot of flights tend to be quite early, so it might make sense to stay very close by like the Fiji Gateway, or at a hotel that offers check in at the lobby so you won’t have to handle your luggage (some of the Denarau hotels offer that).

I loved the Fiji Airways Lounge at Nadi, which has fast WiFi, food, and also a kids club.

Fiji 7 Day Itinerary

For a Fiji 7 day itinerary, simply skip either Suva or Coral Coast, or the day trips. You can also shorten the cruise to 3 nights, and spend more time in Nadi or Denarau. You can customize your itinerary according to your interests and needs, and add or skip any destinations or activities as you wish.
