Taiwan
Taiwan is a sweet potato shaped island northeast of Philippines and south of Japan. It is often overlooked by visitors who flock to Southeast Asia to backpack or to Japan or Korea to eat and sightsee.
But not only do you find ridiculously cheap street food in Taiwan, there are also surfing hot spot, 3000+m mountains, hot springs, and warm people. So make sure you save a spot for Taiwan in your trip and I’ll bring you some tips.

Transport: Trains are very efficient and there are also many bus links. Bus can be sparse in rural area. A must have is EasyCard to get around.
Currency: New Taiwanese Dollar (NTW). 4 NTW = 1 HKD, 125 NTW ~ 4 USD
Sim card: On my most recent trip I had problem activating my physical sim card and ended up getting an eSim that was super easy to install and worked really well.
Handy apps: Google Translate is your friend as more places than expected won’t have English. Google Map works quite well in Taiwan as well but you likely need to use local website to check regional transport time table
Language: Taiwan speaks Mandarin but uses traditional Chinese characters (like HK and Macau). Knowing some Mandarin can really help!
